Keens review by Tom K meal paid for by Grant R

Grant was generous enough to purchase a fine meal at Keens due to the magnitude of Boston sucking and Mark Teixeira getting 20 home runs before Jason Bay did.

The place is an old school - blow your executive expense account- hundred plus years old-type place with antique clay pipes decorating the ceiling with an overall warm wood aesthetic. I liked the feel better than at Luger's. I guess Grant wanted a picnic table, rude old waiters and bright lights or something. I think we both agreed the cut of porterhouse we got that night was superior to Peter Luger's, based on very low gristle and fat content.

Grant cried they didn't have Peter Luger sauce and I almost punched his spine. They did have a decent red wine reduction sauce and some bernaise that at least made Grant pull up his lace panties and continue eating. The hash brown side was awesome as was the crab cake appetizer. Bread and spinach were average and the dessert we tried was the caramel sundae which is hard to fuck up and tasted very nice. The steak was not boiling in butter like at Lugers and was cold very quickly although it was a lot less fatty.

Steak Cut/Experience 9/10
Sides/Desserts 7/10
Atmosphere 7/10
Service 7/10
Debauchery Level 6/10

Overall just fell short of Lugers, though a nice goddamn meal!!!!

Great Steak Update

As you already know Grant and I are wagering our hard earned cash for bragging rights and more importantly perfectly cooked bovine flesh. As of this post, Texiera upped the RBI's to 60 to Bay's 69 for the first to get 80 RBI bet. If we win tonite, Yankees are just trailing by 3 games with about 13 to go to the All-Star break bet of best record by July 14th. Burnette was awesome and was one hit short of the no hitter bet yesterday. The heat is on Rogers!

Jeter seems to like it...

I think this video pretty much sums up the Yankees.

Tit for Tat

Grant being from Nebraska and all and not exposed to a whole hell of a lot til like last year understandably thinks Lugers is the end and be all of steaks. He could be right... Our 2009 Yankees Red Sux Steak Tour should provide some insight to all this. Then again, he also thinks this is a baseball fan..

We, who were not so lucky to be born corn fed and live in a fly over state, know this to be a proper fan...Bring on the games!

Tom's 2 Cents and the Boston Red Sox way of baseball

First of all, I'm happy to say that Grant and I are embarking on a healthy contest of bragging rights and coronary disease that is the 2009 Yankees/Red Sux NYC Steak Tour!!! Grant's uploaded image of A-Rod is an admittedly lame showcase of narcissism, but the above picture is, I believe, full-cock-grab (Not photo-shopped I might add), you make the call. Next post...Tit for Tat! Bye Baseball fans!

Grant Reviews Peter Luger's Steak House

As I said in the first post, my first experience with Luger's left me having psychadelic dreams that night. It was, hands down, the best meal I had ever had. I have been there several times since then and each time it gets better.

I may be wrong, but I believe they only serve the Porterhouse cut. These are huge steaks. I normally don't like my steak too pink, but don't insult them by ordering it cooked any more than medium. It is not bloody at all and you don't want to ruin that great piece of meat by charring it. You can order the right amount of steak based on your party size.

The sides are all unbelievable. FYI - put the Peter Lugers house steak sauce on EVERYTHING. I'm not a fan of tomatoes whatsoever. But order the Tomatoes and Onion appetizer. It's literally just huge beefsteak tomatoes and huge raw onion slices, but the combination is fantastic. The other appetizer you should get it the bacon. Huge strips of thick bacon, or as I like to call it "Steak-on". I'm also not a fan of spinach, but you need to get the creamed spinach. The german potato side is also a staple. Or just ask your waiter what he recommends.

The ambience is really the biggest draw for me. A lot of the times, high-end restaurants in NYC have a dress code and are a bit 'hoighty-toighty'. Not here. You could show up in a t-shirt and shorts if you want. People are loud and having a good time. The waiter are all these old German dudes, who are extremely helpful and nice. You could get a simple cold beer or something from their extensive wine list.

I wish I could say something bad about this place, but I can't. If I could afford to eat here every week I would. It's saying a lot that we are basing our reviews of the other steak houses based on how they compare to Peter Luger's. This place is the best.

How It All Started...

Tom and Grant's New York City Steak Tour started because the Yankees suck. And A-Rod is wicked gay.
Living in NYC, I've always enjoyed watching the Yankees lose and hearing the entire city sigh in depression and frustration. How could they lose with a payroll and a super-star lineup? Because they suck. And I enjoyed it even more if it was at the hands of the Boston Red Sox.

My colleague and co-founder, Tom, is one of the poor, masochistic souls who enjoy watching the Yankees blow it each year. We may have different tastes in baseball teams, but one thing we can both agree on is a great steak. So we decided to pit our teams against one another and wager steak nights in the process. Win or lose, we get to watch baseball and eat steak.

So our bets for the 2009 Season are as follows:
-The team who wins the division will win a steak dinner at Peter Lugers. If neither wins the division, whoever wins the AL Wildcard will win the bet. If neither gets the Wildcard, then we split the dinner.
-Best record at the All-Star break wins a steak dinner.
-First player on either team to hit 20 HRs gets a steak lunch.
-First player on either team to hit 80 RBIs gets a steak lunch.
-First pitcher on either team to win 15 games gets a steak lunch.
-There are 3 wildcards that will win a steak dinner. First player to hit a grand slam, first player to hit for the cycle, and first player to pitch a no-hitter.

This allows us to spread our steak lunches and dinners throughout the entire season instead of all at once.

Now you may have noticed that the only specific steak house that was mentioned was Peter Lugers, located in Brooklyn. The first time I ate at Peter Lugers Steak House I had psychadelic dreams that night. It was the best meal that I have ever had in my life. We decided to take a tour of the other well-known steak houses in the city and see how they compared to Peter Lugers. And thus this blog was born. Hopefully our reviews will be helpful to anyone wanting a great steak in New York City.
